CULTURE CONNECTION.

Explore diversity through the study, creation, reflection, outreach and collaboration in the visual arts. Connect how culture and time influence visual characteristics and give meaning and value to works of art. Create artwork with personal, cultural and or historical meaning and purpose.

Cultural Mask

Students will look at  masks from around the world, identifying common themes amongst each culture. They will use images, colors, and themes within their own personal culture to individualize their piece of art.

Mexican Sugar Skull

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends. Sugar Skulls are a delicious candy!

Students will design and produce a clay rendition of a sugar skull, complete with innovative designs etched within the clay and finished with bright paint to enhance the piece.

Ancient Egyptians used a sarcophagus as a vessel to be buried in a tomb. Pharoahs were buried in elaborate and huge monuments, called Pyramids.

Using clay, create a sarcophagus using the following criteria...

  • a human or animal form, including a face

  • diffferent patterns all over

  • Hieroglyphs to spell your name

  • additional attachment that creates "relief," or stands out

  • personal symbols that recognize your individuality

Egyptian Sarcophagus

Gargoyles were created to function as gutters on cathedrals.  The sound that was heard when it rained, allowing the water to flow through, gave them the name “gargoyle.”  In French, the translation means “to gargle.”

Using clay, create a gargoyle using the following criteria…

  • 1 body combining more than one animal together

  • Each creature is recognizable

  • Pose is interesting from all sides

  • Size fits in your tray and is approximately no larger than a softball

  • Texture is realistic and appropriate for the subject matter

  • The parts are firmly attached using scoring/slipping

    • Scoring- make hatch marks to “scuff up” the clay surface

    • Slipping- use the slip to act as the “glue”

CLAY RATTLE N' ROLL!

Inspired by functional pottery from different places around the world, students will create a rattle in the form of an animal, monster, or human.  Students will make pinch pots, adhere pieces using a scoring and slipping technique, and demonstrate craftsmanship.

PLASTER FORMS

Henry Moore created forms using different media. We will explore the use of positive and negative space within and around a 3-dimensional sculpture.
